YA, YA, YA- wonderful YA. What is it that makes this collection so popular among readers- teens and adults alike? While YA books are generally aimed at readers ranging in age from approximately 12 to 18, it is a category that appeals to many adults- myself included- as well. In fact, it is estimated that roughly half of the readers of YA books are adults! The YA genre is in fact not a genre at all- it is a collection of books intended for young adult consumption. Housed within the Young Adult collection are works of nearly every genre you will find in Adult Fiction- from fantasy novels featuring sparkly vampires, reimagined fairy tales, and elvin assassins to dystopian futures where charismatic young men and women lead rebellions, inspire change, and survive the apocalyptic conditions of a future world that seems far too possible. YA books also take on disease, disaster, and personal tragedy to offer truths wrapped in fiction that can provide perspective for young, and not-so-young, readers.
So, what is it about this collection that connects with so many readers and often ignites a voracious appetite for reading?

What do you think of when you imagine a library? When you close your eyes, do you see a dim space, lined with books wrapped in expectations of silence? Or do you see an interactive space filled with activity and a low thrum of conversation? An exciting environment full of possibilities to be discovered?
Why do I want to pursue a career as a librarian? My ultimate goals are to enable others to reach their goals, to create opportunities for experiences, and to fashion the library into a sort-of Safe Space where people of all walks of life can come together without fear of racism, homophobia, ageism, sexism, and all the other things that divide us. I want libraries to be a celebrated and essential component of a community, retaining an emphasis on freedom of information and adding a freedom of expression. My intended career is as a Youth Services Librarian with a strong focus on programming which I feel will empower me in connecting with youths to make a positive difference in the community and give me space to create innovative and diverse programming to offer them experiences outside of their personal realm.
I recently constructed a brief survey for 'tweens' (8-13) to learn more about what factors impact their reading choices. If you know any tweens who would be interested in sharing their thoughts on the subject, please direct them to the survey!
Here is a link to the survey: Tween Reading Interests Survey For those interested, here is a link to the results: Tween Reading Interests Survey Results If you are wondering what to read this summer, here are some challenges! If you participate, let me know what you're reading! :)
After reviewing information on the technology that will have a significant role in shaping the future of education, I have selected five trends in educational technology that I think are some of the most important. Educational technology is a field that is consistently evolving and advancing. In the future, we will continue to see technology evolve in ways that prove beneficial to the goal of educating a wide variety of students. Much of the technology that will shape the future of educational technology is already available. After reviewing information on the technology that will have a significant role in shaping the future of education, I have selected five trends in educational technology that I think are some of the most important. Tools such as massively open online courses (MOOCs), digital textbooks, gamification, flipped classrooms, and mobile learning are already beginning to revolutionize the world of education (Kroski, n.d.). This technology is working to differentiate education and make it accessible to many more individuals.
As our knowledge of the world around us evolves, so too should the way we teach. In the words of John Dewey, "If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow". As our knowledge of the world around us evolves, so too should the way we teach. The addition of technology in classrooms has expanded the possibilities of how we can teach and opened the doors to where we can teach. With technology, assignments can be researched, completed, and submitted online. In terms of higher education, technology enables students like myself to attend a University and earn a degree entirely online. Perhaps one of the most important things technology can do in a classroom is assist teachers in differentiating instruction and allowing students to learn at their own pace, be it slower or faster than their classmates.
