As our knowledge of the world around us evolves, so too should the way we teach. In the words of John Dewey, "If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow". As our knowledge of the world around us evolves, so too should the way we teach. The addition of technology in classrooms has expanded the possibilities of how we can teach and opened the doors to where we can teach. With technology, assignments can be researched, completed, and submitted online. In terms of higher education, technology enables students like myself to attend a University and earn a degree entirely online. Perhaps one of the most important things technology can do in a classroom is assist teachers in differentiating instruction and allowing students to learn at their own pace, be it slower or faster than their classmates. When I was a student in elementary school, we were beginning to use technology. We had computer time in which we played The Oregon Trail and learn to type. Other technology I encountered in the classroom included calculators (though we were discouraged, and sometimes forbidden, from using them), overhead projectors, and televisions and VCR players. When I reached high school, computers were being used far more; we were frequently using the internet to do research and typing up our assignments on programs like Word.
Today's technology goes further and allows for younger students to have a more individualized education experience. If I had been in a classroom that used video games for math, I may have had an easier time with it. The use of iPads and tablets bring those resources right into a classroom and have the potential to aid an almost unlimited number of lessons. With technology students can move on to the next step in a lesson while others spend more time on the basic concepts of the lesson. Technology can allow for a deeper and more involved study of things like space, geology, and geography. The possibilities for what a creative, committed, and knowledgeable instructor could teach with the assistance of technology are endless.
