Why do I want to pursue a career as a librarian? My ultimate goals are to enable others to reach their goals, to create opportunities for experiences, and to fashion the library into a sort-of Safe Space where people of all walks of life can come together without fear of racism, homophobia, ageism, sexism, and all the other things that divide us. I want libraries to be a celebrated and essential component of a community, retaining an emphasis on freedom of information and adding a freedom of expression. My intended career is as a Youth Services Librarian with a strong focus on programming which I feel will empower me in connecting with youths to make a positive difference in the community and give me space to create innovative and diverse programming to offer them experiences outside of their personal realm. My concerns with the future of libraries is that I think some libraries are holding on to the ways of the past rather than embracing the evolution of libraries. The technology saturated society we currently live in can either enhance or threaten a library depending on how we handle it. Another concern I have for the future of libraries is that many people have an outdated idea of what a library is and they recognize that that stereotypical library is quickly losing relevance in a world where technology is available at our literal fingertips and that that misconception of libraries will cause those people to miss out on all that modern libraries have to offer.
My fondest hope is that I will be able to part of a generation of librarians that will inspire the young people to invest in their passions and create change in the world. I want to be a positive influence in teaching young people that they have more power than they know and enable them to invest in their communities. I want to help them figure out how they can translate their passion into action.
